Traditional Typography Designed for Developing Readers

Middle grade novels (aimed at ages 8–12) follow the structure of traditional adult fiction, but with subtle modifications to accommodate developing readers. We scale the body typeface slightly larger (generally 11pt to 12pt depending on the font family) and select fonts with highly readable characters, such as Sabon or Garamond. Line spacing (leading) is slightly opened up to reduce eye strain over longer reading sessions.

To enhance visual appeal and break up large blocks of text, we often include drop caps, small chapter ornaments, or custom running headers. Part dividers are used in longer adventure or fantasy series to establish clear section breaks.

Print and Digital Asset Management

Many middle grade novels feature fantasy maps, family trees, or occasional illustrations. We clean and optimize these graphic assets, ensuring they are rendered at high contrast in grayscale for standard paperback printing. We use Adobe InDesign to set up precise margins and gutter settings to ensure that no artwork falls into the binding crease.

We deliver print-ready PDFs and reflowable EPUB files that pass KDP, IngramSpark, and Lulu quality checks on the first submission. All files are constructed to pass validation testing, ensuring compatibility with all major e-readers and tablet devices.
