Board book formatting starts with the physical object. The thick paperboard construction means your interior file must account for a wider gutter margin — text placed too close to the spine will disappear into the binding. We calculate exact safe zones based on your page count and paperboard thickness. Every sheet of paper board is pasted together, creating a thick page that resists tears and moisture but significantly alters the books interior fold dynamics compared to standard paperbacks.

For print books, setting up correct bleeds is critical. Because board books are often printed on thick board and cut using die-cuts with rounded corners, your illustrations must extend 0.125 inches past the trim line. Any text or essential elements must sit at least 0.25 inches inside the rounded boundary to ensure they are not cut off during manufacturing. We map these boundaries inside Adobe InDesign templates before arranging your layouts.

Fixed-Layout EPUB and Digital Conversion

For digital distribution, we produce fixed-layout EPUB3 files that preserve your board book’s design on every screen. Read-aloud overlay support is included for Apple Books and Kindle Fire, allowing narration to highlight words as they are spoken — a key feature for early childhood engagement. We format every page as a double-page spread or single pages depending on the target viewing device, ensuring that text remains perfectly crisp and readable at all display scales.
